Frequently Asked Questions
Your Funeral Director FAQs
The honest answer is … it depends.
Every farewell is as unique as the person being honoured, so there isn't a single price that fits every family.
The overall cost will depend on:
- The type of service you choose – cremation or burial.
- The venue.
- Cemetery fees.
- Flowers.
- A celebrant.
- Catering.
- Stationery.
- Any personal touches that feel right for your person.
At Your Funeral Director, we don't believe in packages. We work alongside you to create a meaningful farewell that truly reflects your person, while remaining within what your family can comfortably afford. We'll always be clear and transparent with our pricing … no hidden costs, no surprises.
In most cases, cremation is less expensive than burial.
Burial typically involves additional costs that cremation avoids. These can include the cemetery plot, interment fees, monumental masonry, and ongoing cemetery charges. But every family's circumstances are different.
We'll take the time to explain all your options and help you find the path that feels right for you … without pressure, and without steering you toward something that doesn't sit comfortably with your needs or your budget.
No. There's no legal requirement in Australia to hold a funeral service.
Some families choose a direct cremation or a private burial without a formal ceremony. Others gather weeks or even months later for a memorial, when the time feels right.
What we've seen, again and again, is how valuable it can be to pause … to gather … and to acknowledge the life of your person. A funeral isn't only about saying goodbye. It's about holding space for the people left behind.
There's no right or wrong way to farewell someone. Only the way that's right for your family.
The shape.
- A coffin – wider at the shoulders and tapers toward the head and feet, giving it that traditional six-sided silhouette.
- A casket – rectangular with four sides, and often has a split lid.
Neither is better than the other. It simply comes down to personal preference, style, and what feels right for your person and your budget. We'll walk you through the options without pressure, and help you find something that truly reflects them.
Ashes may generally be scattered in a meaningful place, provided you have permission where it's required.
For example, you’ll need the landowner’s consent on private property. Approval from the relevant authority may be required on public land and national parks, while many beaches and waterways allow ashes to be scattered respectfully, subject to local council regulations. Also, cemeteries often have designated memorial gardens for ash placement.
If you're unsure about a particular place, we're happy to guide you through the options … helping you find somewhere that deeply honours their story.
No. In Australia, families can arrange many aspects of a farewell themselves.
That said, there are legal requirements, paperwork, transportation, registrations, and logistics that can become genuinely overwhelming when you're already carrying grief.
A funeral director takes care of those responsibilities so your family can focus on being together … rather than navigating administrative processes alone.
At Your Funeral Director, we see ourselves as guides and companions, not simply organisers. We walk beside you through the whole journey, so you're never left to carry any of it on your own.
This is very common.
Most people haven't documented their wishes before they die. In those situations, the next of kin usually make the decisions, often drawing on conversations, memories, or what they believe their person would have wanted.
That's why we gently encourage families to have these conversations before they're needed. Talking about death doesn't bring it any closer ... it simply makes the difficult decisions a little easier for the people you love, when the time comes.
If you'd like to explore pre-planning for yourself or someone close to you, we're here whenever it feels right.
There are no rules when it comes to music.
Some families choose traditional hymns. Others choose songs that reflect personality, humour, or a memory that belongs entirely to that person. The best funeral song isn't necessarily a popular one … it's the one that tells the story of your loved one.
A few songs families often request:
- Time to Say Goodbye – Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman.
- My Way – Frank Sinatra.
- Supermarket Flowers – Ed Sheeran.
- Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler.
- Amazing Grace.
- Hallelujah.
- Dancing Queen – ABBA.
- That's Amore – Dean Martin.
We'll help you find the music that feels true to who your person was.
Absolutely.
One of the most common misconceptions is that a funeral must be held in a chapel or a church. It doesn't.
We've created beautiful farewells in gardens, RSL clubs, sporting fields, restaurants, community halls, family homes, beaches, and at the graveside. If a place held meaning during someone's life, it may be exactly the right place to honour it.
If you're wondering whether a particular venue is possible … ask us. We love finding a way to make it work.
Most services last between 45 and 90 minutes.
The timing depends on the number of speakers, the music, any cultural or religious traditions, and the personal elements you'd like to include.
There's no perfect length. The best farewell allows enough time for family and friends to reflect, remember, and say goodbye … without anyone feeling rushed. We'll work with you to shape a service that moves at the right pace for your family.
Yes.
This is one of the questions we're asked most often … and the answer is always yes.
Wherever possible, the funeral director who meets with you to arrange the service is the same person who walks beside you through the entire journey, from bringing your person into our care, through the arrangements, on the day itself, and in the days that follow.
At Your Funeral Director, we call this our Continuity of Care philosophy. Trust is built through relationships, not handovers. Once you're part of the YFD family, we remain beside you … before, during, and after.
